BE SMART Program

BE SMART stands for a Better Education in Science, Math, and Arts for Talented Young Men. It is a program that provides a positive option in a safe environment in which to develop skills in math, science and the arts while having fun. Participants are encouraged to enter professions in science, engineering, mathematics and nontraditional roles in the arts. The program targets young men in middle school and high school, initially within five to 10 miles of the Urban League and eventually, county-wide. There will be a math/science/arts camp followed by bi-weekly activities to explore youth’s interest in a fun and enriching way. Host events for BE SMART participants encourages participants more selection in coursework in math and science. In addition, it exposes them to adult male role models –scientists, mathematicians, engineers and artists (science, nature, medical illustrators)—who share their knowledge, passion and experiences in science, engineering and art careers. BE SMART will also include college preparation, parenting, mentoring, and tutorial components that will enhance the participants experience.
